This stretch of the river Derwent is an excellent winter roach fishery, the roach in the Derwent congregate here in the deep water above the weir at Sutton on Derwent during the winter months. For as long as I can remember this has always been my favorite winter place to fish,In my opinion the roach fishing in the middle to lower part of the river has improved during the last 3 or 4 years I have had fish over a pound at Howsham and above and below at Buttercrambe and below Stamford Bridge. A lot of the lower Derwent roach find themselves here in the warmer deep water and some good fishing can be had. Day Tickets from the village store near the Grey Horse pub in Elvington.
This stretch is about one and a half mile from the weir upstream left bank to the limit sign, It is jointly held by York & District AA and Leeds Amalgamation.
